Compass Point Primary School

Welcome to our Specialist Resource Base

Who are we?

The Resource Base at Compass Point Primary (RBCCP) was opened in 2021 and provides specialist educational support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Specifically, children with Education, Health and Care plans (EHCP) with a primary need of Autism or Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

Please note that we have no places available in any of our Resource Base classes at this current time.

About our facilities

The Resource Base has four classes with up to eight children in each. These classes are in two different parts of the school.

Greenfinch and Chaffinch are downstairs. They have two classrooms, a therapy room, a sensory room, and a special outdoor area.

Goldfinch and Zebrafinch are upstairs, near Years 4, 5, and 6. They have two learning rooms, their own sensory room, and a calm space to help children feel safe and settled.

About our children

Children in the Resource Base are an important part of our school. They follow a high-quality curriculum, based on the National Curriculum or Early Years Framework, that is specially adapted for each child. It is designed to match their needs and interests and helps them learn in different ways.

When it is right for them, some children also join in with lessons in the main school as well as having specialist teaching.

What is our Vision

We want every child to be the best they can be. We help them learn important life skills, become more independent, handle their feelings, and build good friendships. We also get them ready for the next steps in learning and growing.

We aim for each child to feel proud of who they are and grow in confidence,  and self-esteem. We do this through tailored support in Resource Base, the mainstream classroom, and the wider community.

Our Teaching and Learning

Each child is at the centre of their learning, and we make sure learning is fun and enjoyable. The mix of lessons, personal support, behaviour help, and therapy is different for each pupil, depending on what they need.

We teach a wide range of subjects, building on what pupils already know. Lessons are taught in different ways to match how each child learns best. We also use our forest school garden for outdoor learning.

Pupils work on their own EHCP goals, and we check their progress often to make sure learning is right for them.

We use special ways to help with communication, like Makaton, PECS, and TEACCH. Helping pupils learn to communicate is a big part of what we do.

Children learn in whole class lessons, small groups, and one-to-one sessions. These take place in calm spaces with fewer distractions. Extra adult support and a flexible approach help children learn well with others.

Our Curriculum

We follow the National Curriculum or the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, depending on each child’s age and needs.

We use a fun, hands-on way of learning that includes seeing, hearing, and touching to help children explore and understand the world. This helps them grow in their learning and build confidence and friendships.

Learning is split into half-term themes that link different subjects together.

Lessons are broken into small steps with clear, easy-to-follow tasks. We use visual timetables, “first and then” prompts, brain breaks, social stories, and pre-teaching to help children move smoothly between lessons.

Inclusion

Through shared activities such as reading, maths, science, art, forest school, gardening, playground games, PE and cooking, pupils will learn alongside a small group of their peers and develop their interaction and communication with others.

Applying for a place at Resource Base Compass Point

Parents and carers can ask for a place at the Resource Base through the SEND team at Bristol City Council.

Your child must have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) with a main need of Autism (ASC) or Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

Children in mainstream classes can only move to the Resource Base if they are given a place by the SEND team at the council.

Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)

What is an EHCP?
An EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) is a special plan for children and young people who need extra help at school because of a disability or special educational needs (SEN).

It is for people from birth up to 25 years old who need more support than their school or setting usually gives.

The plan says:

  • What help the child or young person needs

  • What they want to achieve

  • What support is needed to help them get there

Families and professionals work together to create the plan. The goal is to make sure children can get the education, health care, and support they need to do their best and feel happy and safe.

The Council’s expectation is that pupil places in our Resource Base will have particular needs in line with the definitions of the SEND Code of Practice 2015

Autism Spectrum Condition

Children with autism may find it hard to make friends, understand social rules, or know how to join in with others. They might also have trouble with talking, understanding language, or using their imagination in the same way as others.

Because of this, they may have found school or life in the community really difficult.

With the right support, help from trained adults, and a calm and understanding environment, many children with autism can build skills and confidence to take part more in everyday school life.
