Reading
Intent
At Compass point, we believe that reading is the foundation of learning and the key to understanding the world. We are guided by the principles of the Reading Reconsidered approach, where vocabulary is carefully selected for understanding, reading aloud is expertly modelled and monitored by our teachers, and pupils’ reading skills are continually developed to build stamina.
Our reading curriculum is designed to help every child become a confident, fluent, and thoughtful reader. Children experience a rich range of high-quality, challenging texts that inspire curiosity, broaden knowledge, and build empathy. Through the careful teaching of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, pupils learn to read deeply, exploring how writers use language and structure to create meaning.
Our approach develops both the skill and the joy of reading. We aim for every child to leave primary school able to read with confidence and understanding, ready to engage critically and enthusiastically with the stories, ideas, and knowledge that shape their world.
