Art

Intent

Our Art & Design curriculum aims to inspire, challenge and engage all pupils as they explore their creative potential. We provide rich opportunities for children to generate ideas, produce imaginative work and develop their artistic voice. Through the use of sketchbooks, pupils learn to record observations, reflect on their experiences and refine their thinking as they grow in confidence as young artists.

We teach pupils to become increasingly proficient in a wide range of artistic skills, including drawing, painting, sculpture and other craft and design techniques. They learn to use materials and processes thoughtfully and creatively, gaining technical knowledge that supports their ability to express ideas visually.

A key part of our curriculum is developing pupils’ understanding of significant artists, craft makers and designers. By studying diverse artistic traditions and learning about the historical and cultural contexts of art forms, pupils broaden their perspective and deepen their appreciation of creative practice.

Throughout their journey, pupils are encouraged to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. This helps them to think critically, articulate their choices and recognise the power of visual communication.

Overall, our intent is to cultivate curiosity, creativity and artistic skill, enabling every pupil to experience the joy of making and to develop as confident, thoughtful and imaginative creators.

Design Technology (DT)

Intent

At Compass Point, our Design & Technology curriculum aims to equip children with the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to thrive in an increasingly technological world. Using the Kapow Primary scheme of learning, we provide a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that enables pupils to design, make and evaluate purposeful products through a clear and progressive design cycle. Children build creativity and problem-solving skills as they generate and refine ideas, learn from designers and engineers, and develop an understanding of how design impacts everyday life. Practical experience with structures, mechanisms, textiles, cooking and digital systems helps pupils develop accuracy, confidence and technical vocabulary while applying knowledge from science, mathematics, computing and art.

Our intent is that all children become imaginative, resilient and resourceful learners who can work collaboratively, think critically and take pride in craftsmanship. Kapow’s well-sequenced lessons ensure that learning is accessible for all, including those with SEND, through purposeful modelling, scaffolding and hands-on exploration. Pupils also learn essential life skills through cooking and nutrition, understanding food origins, healthy choices and safe preparation. Through this rich and engaging curriculum, Compass Point pupils develop transferable skills and a deep appreciation of design and technology that prepares them to participate meaningfully in a dynamic, modern world.
